Home to one of the world’s most impressive architectural wonders, the Forbidden City, China’s capital hosts much of the cultural artefacts of the country that survived the Cultural Revolution.
Inside the Forbidden City is the Palace Museum containing the imperial art collection, while the National Museum of China showcasing the history of Chinese art is located on the east of the nearby Tiananmen Square.
The best modern art is contained in one area, the 798 Art Zone, a former military factory converted to dozens of tiny galleries. It’s at its most vibrant at in late April when Art Beijing takes place.
Fans of Performing Arts can’t miss the Peking Opera, a unique combination of acrobatics, mime, dance, music and singing that developed in the late 1700s and performed in venues built in those times, including Prince Gong Mansion and Hugang Guild Hall.
