    Best Time to Visit

Santa Fe's warm summers and pleasant falls are when most of the major festivals and events happen. Summer also gets busy as it is the peak season with the Art Santa Fe, Santa Fe International Folk Art Market, Santa Fe Bandstand, Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, Santa Fe Opera festival season and Spanish Market kicking off in July, as well as the famous Santa Fe Indian Market in August. Come fall in September and October, temperatures drop slightly — but remain comfortable — and the city's aspen leaves take on a blazing gold hue. The Fiestas de Santa Fe takes place in September, while the Santa Fe Film Festival happens in October.

    What to Pack

Bring a sweater. Layers are a smart bet, too, to maximize ease and comfort from day to night. While Santa Fe has a desert climate, its high altitude makes even summer nights chilly. Casual dressing is the norm here; both visitors and locals are often seen in eclectic casual wear and togged out in cowboy or cowgirl boots. This is definitely a place you can get away with wearing jeans to a fine dining restaurant.

    General Tips

Artists have long had a long love affair with Santa Fe; in 1880, the arrival of Santa Fe's first trains and highways drew wanderers — many among them artists — who were attracted by the city’s rich diversity and history.

Santa Fe's visual arts scene is a vibrant one, due to a rich intersection of Native American, Hispanic, and Anglo influences. Santa Fe in fact has the third largest art market in America, trailing behind just New York City and Los Angeles.

Adobe buildings and homes are a distinctive sight in Santa Fe-style architecture, due to the influence of the Pueblo Indians who built their houses with wood, stone and adobe.

The Santa Fe Opera holds its own as one of the world's leading opera festivals.
