    Best Time to Visit

Venice's balmy weather is beautiful in late spring and early summer, but this also means museums and attractions fill up quickly with crowds, more so than any other time in the year. The city — made of 117 islands surrounded by water — is also prone to acqua alta or flooding all year round. While it is more of an annoyance than it is hazardous, it may be worth avoiding the high water season from October to January. Definitely see if the Venice Biennale is happening — it starts from May or June and runs through to November every other year. February or March marks the Carnevale di Venezia, where attendees celebrate Lent in baroque costumes and elaborate masks.

    What to Pack

Style matters to Venetians, so leave the denim behind and pack your nicest clothes. For that matter, bring comfortable (and stylish) footwear as you will be doing a lot of walking. Insect repellent is a must to ward off persistent mosquitoes if you go in late summer. Ladies should also pack shawls — these can cover bare arms and shoulders — for adequate coverage when entering a church.

    General Tips

As an influential artistic centre during the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and Baroque periods, Venice has a rich art heritage that saw the city’s artists become proponents of a particular art style known as the Venetian School in the 16th century. Many affluent Venetians were fierce patrons of the arts.

One of Venice's most treasured artistic craft specialities is decorative Venetian glass that comes from the island of Murano. Barovier & Toso — founded in 1295 and one of the world's oldest companies — continues to produce Venetian glass to this day.

Venice is also known for its major arts events. Of special significance is Venice Biennale, the prestigious contemporary art event that takes place for six months every two years from May or June. Part of the Venice Biennale is the Venice Film Festival. Founded in 1932, it is the oldest film festival in the world and runs in August or September on the island of Lido.
